>> MARK : So skimming is looking over a text very quickly
to get the essence of the text,
whereas scanning is looking over a text quickly
to get one specific piece of information.
>> SAM : Skimming is when you're looking through a document,
you're not looking for anything specific,
you're trying to garner the meaning
or the emphasis or the main theme
of what is being said in that statement.
So you're not necessarily pouring over every word
but you're reading quickly,
looking for what is the key point
that this document is trying to tell you.
Well, scanning is when you're looking
through a document, looking for a fact that you need
that you're looking for above all other facts,
it might be someone's name, it might be where they're from,
it might be a time when they did something
that you know about.
>> MARK : So if I'm looking for information on a certain player maybe
and I want to find out his age,
I know it's in a certain piece of text
and I might quickly go...
I know what I'm looking for,
but I will scan it really quickly and I will try to find the age.
