[Shannon] My name is Shannon, I'm ten years old and I'm in Year Five. I had a lot of energy but I didn't really know what to do with it and then my best friend left so I was like, 'Ok, I don't know what to do' yeah.
[Daniel Flynn]: My name is Daniel Flynn, I'm a Year Five teacher. Shannon is a very energetic child and I think maybe some of that has come across as, has caused a lack of focus in how she's behaved in the classroom. A lot of the written work was quite fuzzy, that was a real issue for us.
[Katie Grainger]: I'm Katie Grainger, I work for the Albion Foundation and I'm a Community Coach. The Young Leaders Programme is all about choosing characters, that have a lot of potential but they don't quite have the skills and how to portray them to younger people.
[Shannon]: When Katie and Mr Flynn came to me about the Young Leaders, I thought like 'Woah, this is my dream. I'm so interested in this, lets do it'. Before the lunch club, Katie talks to us in the library about what we're going to do and the types of activities.
[Katie Grainger]: What we've got to do, is come up with games, and how we can engage with the younger children. At the start of the programme, I would lead on the first couple of sessions. What do we do when we're catching a ball, what's this?
[Child]: Catching cup.
[Katie Grainger]: Catching cup, excellent. And then I will try and pass a little bit more responsibility over to them, as time went on.
[Shannon]: This is going to teach us how to work as a team, ok? Shall we start? The young part of Young Leaders, it makes me feel proud of myself. It's made me more confident in my school work and it's made me more focused as well.
[Daniel Flynn]: The skills that she's learnt there are about organising and planning what she's been doing, have really found their way into her written and mathematical work and the teachers across the school are thrilled to see the progress.
[Shannon]: To know that someone's getting inspired by the Young Leaders, I think it's just amazing. Now, like loads of kids just keep on running up to me, giving me a hug, I never had that before. It's been an amazing experience.
