This pack is designed to help KS1/Foundation pupils explore, develop and refine a range of agility skills using an outer space theme. It contains a warm-up activity, a skill-development activity, and two activities that allow children to consolidate their newly developed skills in a fun game.

Learning outcomes

Pupils will be able to:

  • Master different travel movements with control of the body
  • Travel at different speeds, in different directions and on different levels
  • Describe why the body gets warmer following sustained movement around the space

Film: Agility - Travelling summary

This film shows how the warm-up 'Out of this world!, the skill development 'Travelling stardust' and 'The Mars maze' game from this pack work in practice. Pupils will develop their controlled movement skills and reflect on how to improve.

Warm-up: Out of this world!

This warm-up needs no specialist equipment, is suitable for indoors and outdoors, and is easy to set up and deliver. Pupils explore a variety of travelling movements, and finish with mind and body ready for the activities that follow.

Skill development: Travelling stardust

This activity requires minimal equipment and is great for skills development. Pupils develop travelling skills including side steps, tiptoeing, giant steps and front support.

Game: Space travel

'Space travel' gives pupils a chance to put the travelling skills they have been practising into action in a fun game. They move through the game at different speeds and at different levels, from tiptoe to hands and feet.

Game: The Mars maze

A second game that gives pupils a chance to practise their travelling skills. This time, though, they need a greater awareness of what others are up to on the same playing area!

Cool down: Roving reporter review

Pupils cool down by moving slowly as they walk around the activity area with a partner. As they walk they self-review their learning, while being interviewed and sharing with their partner.

This is a quick and fun activity that will help you practice travelling in all sorts of different ways. You can play it on your own or with a friend.
