This pack helps pupils achieve two key skills: a balanced ready position and the ability to travel around a court in different ways. These skills are particularly useful in net and wall games such as tennis, squash and badminton.

Learning outcomes

Pupils will be able to:

  • master basic movements including walking on tiptoes, side steps, giant steps
  • Demonstrate a balanced ready position
  • Combine a balanced ready position with travelling in different ways and directions
  • Describe what happens to the body during a warm-up activity
  • Work with a partner to improve the quality of a balanced ready position.

Film: Net and wall games summary

This film demonstrates all three activities in this pack in action. Pupils will develop their ready position, and move in different directions while keeping good control of their body.

Warm-up: Sports photographer

This is a fun warm-up for all pupils, which requires no equipment. The pupils play in pairs, moving around an imaginary court, getting both mind and body ready for the activities that follow.

Skill development: Get steady

In 'Get steady!' pupils work on the skills of holding a balanced ready position, as well as travelling in different ways and different directions with good body control. These are all used in a variety of net and wall sports including tennis, table tennis and squash.

This game is a fun challenge that gives pupils an opportunity to practise their ready position and movement skills around court in a larger space.

In the 'Walk and talk review', the pupils cool down while they self-review their learning, exchanging ideas with a partner.
